How do I get to Tonga?
Travel to Tonga can seem daunting but we have some suggestions on the best ways to get you there:
- You can fly into the main island of Tonga which is called Tongatapu. The capital city is called Nukuʻalofa and the international airport is called Fuaʻamotu International Airport. Then there is a local airline Lulutai currently running domestic flights between Tongatapu and Vava’u.
- Nuku’alofa (Tongatapu) is accessible by flights only from Australia (Virgin Australia), New Zealand (Air New Zealand) and Fiji (Fiji Airways).
- Fiji Airways flies direct to Vava’u on certain days and has opened up some new flights to accommodate guests flying via Nadi into Vava’u. please check with Fiji Airways for the most direct route.
How do I get to my tour base?
- Our tours depart from Vava’u.
- Vava’u is accessed via short domestic flights via Lulutai Airlines airlines form the main Island of Tongatapu.
- For Vava’u tours, look for Tongatapu –>Vava’U Lupepau’U flight options. Or you can fly direct from Fiji to Vava’u on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Note for 2024 Fiji Airways has additional flights on various days into Vava’u. check Fiji Airways for details.
My international flight doesn’t match up with the domestic flight timings?
Most flights arriving into Nuku’alofa may require an overnight stay before flying to Vava’u due to the New Airline Lulutai flight schedule not matching international arrivals.
We want to arrive early/stay later, why aren’t there any flights on a Sunday?
Due to Tongan custom, there are no flights or business trading on a Sunday so you will need to take this restriction into consideration when arranging travel.

How to get to the Great Barrier Reef
Our trip to snorkel with Minke whales & dive the Barrier Reef begin in Cairns, tropical north Queensland, Australia. This is where we board our liveaboard vessel. Depending on which country you are travelling from, you may be able to fly directly to Cairns, but most likely you may transit through another city such as Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney. If traveling from within Australia, there would be daily flights from most major domestic airports.
